Image size on photo portfolio website?

I'thou putting together a portfolio site for my photography on wordpress.  I think the images expect all-time when viewed full screen, and I was planning on uploading them at full resolution as TIF's for the best quality.

Of course, I quickly came to realize that that is a horrible thought since it slows downwardly the website to a clamber.

So I've switched to JPG'due south, but at what resolution should I upload them?  At full resolution they range from 8mb-23mb in size.  When wordpress displays smaller versions of the images volition it merely downsize those or really load smaller images that are smaller in size?  Should I limit the resolution before I upload them and, if and then, what is a expert size barometer for limiting the long edge?

That'south a neat link.  I'd also like to add that you just accept to experiment ultimately, because sometimes it depends on the theme you are using.  As well, if you want to limit someone copying your photograph you can keep it minor or lightbox information technology.  At that place are notwithstanding means around it, only I generally resize to a point where I don't heed if someone tries to copy, screenshot, or download the photo.

That link is expert, but it seems to focus more on traditional websites.

I've ever kept my image size downwards on a typical website (weblog, etc).  I guess my question is more specific to a portfolio website and whether it being something that focuses on quality images means yous should go outside the norm of sacrificing prototype quality for page speed.  Information technology sounds similar non so much...

Well... I have 3 pretty big splash screens and the load fairly chop-chop, so I would think that a 5MB jpeg should load fifty-fifty faster if you compress it that small.

Re: Paradigm size on photo portfolio website?

Hello. I think it´s not healthy to put total resolution images online. Most people look at information technology with FullHD screens. Some on bigger, some on smaller. If you desire to employ some squeamish galery and the image should be visible at one slice without scrolling, 1200x800 is very usable. For full screen image i ordinarily needs to scroll from 1 side to another, which I consider very uncomfortable and not professional. That fashion You tin can hands fit this image into around one megabite large file.

How-do-you-do. If it's to view in a web browser and not to download it it doesn't make sense to use full resolution TIFF. The best is to utilise JPEGS converted in sRGB color infinite (information technology'southward probably one of the worst colour space, merely it'southward the 'de facto' standard for the web... if you employ others you risk that who looks your images will see incorrect colors).

Every bit for the resolution: full resolution brand sense only if you look people to exercise pixel peeping... and ordinarily I guess you but want people to appreciate your image all together. A full Hard disk drive monitor has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, that means nigh 2Mp... annihilation above that is merely a waste of bits (and could even consequence in worse IQ since the browser volition need to downsample your paradigm to show it). If I upload photos in good resolution I normally use almost 1600pixels for the long border.

I would proceed the size of the files lower than 500kb. If every epitome is several Mb it's most likely that people will merely get tired while loading them and switch to another website without even looking at your nice pictures.

Re: Epitome size on photo portfolio website?

I feel that using 2048 pixels long, with 72 ppi, with 80% quality works extremely well, and saving them equally jpegs.  I don't know how others feel about this, but you can see my images on my website.

hope this helps!

i remember its true ...

Re: Epitome size on photo portfolio website?

I've been told to proceed the file size to 500kb or Google might penalise yous in SEO, just some images loose quality fast, especially if you lot are crushing a massive file. Information technology's a residue, I'm sticking with 1 - 2mb.. y'all don't desire your images looking average to a potential client..
